Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
