Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
